#ThoughtfulThursday - May I Live Like The Lotus...

2.1-ThougtfulThursday-May I live like the Lotus

To say it's been a hard and long week would be an understatement!

Last night, I got 5 hours of sleep.  And that's actually progress because this week's average has been about 2.5.

And then, the Universe stepped in early this a.m. I was scrolling through my email and I came across this...

"NO MUD, NO LOTUS...."

This Buddhist saying has many interpretations:

-Without suffering, there can be no happiness...it takes one to know the other.

-Through acceptance of life's many imperfections, we can transform.

-All things, like mud and beautiful flowers, originate from one source.

I don't know why but this resonates with me and brings me great comfort.

And tonight, before I go to bed, I"m going to put a mud mask and float like a lotus in a lovely scented bath.

My heart is open...

Get CALM and Watch Your Stress Melt Away!

 1.20-Saturday Shopping - Calm App_copy1

It's only the middle of January and I'm already stressing!  So many deadlines and while I'm excited about my projects, I do spend too much time worrying how I'm going to get everything done...

Three weeks ago, I stumbled across the Calm App and thought I'd try it out...

This may sound counterintuitive but I'm now spending at least 10 minutes each morning MEDITATING...

In the past, I've resisted this trend...

(Yeah...I was the obnoxious person that got up during the resting pose in Yoga Class because I had TOO MUCH to do...)

I've been using this App for 2 weeks now!  To my amazement, I've found that I'm more productive and much more grounded.  Since I'm getting so much done, I'm ahead of schedule.

Which leaves me more time for surfing the net and binge watching on Netflix...

Hey...Rome wasn't built in a day...it's a start...

Check it out...you won't be sorry...

#ThoughtfulTuesday! - USING DAILY HABITS TO CHANGE

1.9-ThoughtfulTuesday - Daily Habits.jpg

It’s #ThoughtfulTuesday and as promised, I’m sharing my Daily Habits that I created for 2018.  We all know that it’s not enough to say you want to change, it’s the actions that we do faithfully that will “transform” us in the people we want to be.

I’m starting an intensive Functional Medicine program in February as well as finishing up my Personal Training Credentials.  I feel like I’ve been only focusing on those things and at the end of the year, I was burnt out and feeling very disconnected.

My 2018 Intentions includes more Nurturing and Connecting!  And while this looks like a lot of work, it really wasn’t…Each item took no more than 5-10 minutes (except for the sleep part) and it made me feel accomplished and good at the end of the day!

I used an Excel Spreadsheet to track it and my hope is that I can work on it every day and see how I do.  I don’t expect perfection but at least I have something to work up to.

What’s on your list?  Please share and let’s support each other in being the best that we can be!

NURTURE: No More Excuses – 3 Online Streaming Workouts That Will Get and Keep You Going

11.29-Tuesday Thoughts - Best Online sites

It’s the week after Thanksgiving and I don’t know about you but I indulged in everything!  I know I need to move but I have a crazy month and some deadlines that I’m trying to meet by the end of the year.

My goal is to be active at least an hour a day and since it’s raining this morning, (who says it never rains in SoCal?) my morning walk with my crazy Cleo might not work out…

But before I come up with another excuse, I look at my computer’s Favorite Bookmark Bar and realize that all I have to do is press a button and voila!...my workout awaits me.

Home workout are the best…it has made my exercise a daily routine and a “recess” that I look forward to.  Plus, I can do them anytime I want without having to pack up for the gym or deal with traffic and the sweaty exerciser who thought dousing themselves with cologne would be a great idea (said no one ever….)

Here are my favorite sites…

OMMMM - To DE-Stress, Get Going & Relax

https://www.yogaglo.com/home

If you ever thought about yoga or you’re an experienced Yogi, this site has it all!  I started my Yoga journey with them back in 2010 and probably work out with this site almost every day…sometimes, twice a day.  (I’ll start my day with a Vinyasa Flow and end with a Restorative or Meditative session.)

What I love the most about this site is the Search filters that helps you find classes based on  how much time you want to work out (fast  10 minutes to a luxurious 90 minute classes) , what type of yoga (they have 13 types), what teacher (over 40+ to choose from), and what body part I need to work on (sometimes it’s my shoulder…sometimes it’s my lower back…)

You can subscribe for under $20/month, and stream it from most of your electronic devices.  There’s even a trial period offered.

LET’S GO!....A Variety of Fun Workouts

www.beachbodyondemand.com

I’m a very fickle exerciser One day I want to kickbox, another day I want to channel GI Jane with a Bootcamp class and some days, especially when I’m not in the exercising mood, I want to DANCE!

This site has over 600+ workouts that you can access and I dare you to not find something that will get you moving!  You’ll find some familiar fitness personalities on board…Shaun T (so fun!)…Chalene Johnson (from the Turbo series)…Tony Horton (I have yet to make it through a PX90 without getting bored)…and many more!

This site is also very cost effective.  You can get a year’s subscription for under $160 or pay a quarterly fee (note, not monthly) for under $40.

My teenager feels the need to chime in…

“Well that sounds like a "fabulous idea," but I have NO money!  After all, it’s the Holiday Season…could you pass me the cookies?”

Ahhhh, my lazy grasshopper…my last recommendation is a site that you’ve been looking on for most of the afternoon while you’ve been eating the cookies!

Free, Fun & Fabulous – A Free Variety of Workouts…

www.youtube.com

In the Search Bar, type workouts.  You will find a plethora of workouts and they’re absolutely free.  My Econ class taught me that there is no such thing as a free lunch and this holds true with workouts on YouTube.

You might have to watch a intro video or get a great video right in the middle of a push up…I take it as a sign from the Universe to rest… but that is the small price you pay for dancing with the Fitness Marshall (hilarious and you actually break a sweat ), doing plies (there’s lots of Ballet & Barre workouts) and keeping up with Anna and all her trendy PopSugar Celebrity Trainer workouts.

I recommend that you create playlists for each type of exercise that you do.  I have great Playlists for Ballet, Dance and Kickboxing that I’m happy to share…just let me know in the comments or send me a private message.

Ready?  Set?  Go!  No more excuses …get moving and let me know your favorite online workouts!

NURTURE:  Let It Go! – Getting Comfortable With Who We Are NOW …

9.18-Nurture - Let it Go.jpg

“Old age isn’t so bad when you consider the alternative.”

My mom loved to quote Maurice Chevalier…And she’s right…given the alternative, getting older is not bad at all.

I’m trying not to freak out too much when things go awry.  I’m reminding myself constantly to enjoy the Present.  I’m understanding the wisdom of not sweating the Small Stuff...

“So, does this mean you’re going to stop telling me how to drive?”

See?  I’m not going to even respond because I’m past that...Ommmmm....

With that said, I got a wake up call in the midst of all this peace.   It all started with me going down stairs.   Craaaaaaaaack went the knee!

Seriously?

I’ve been active all my life!  Rock Climbing, Running, Tennis and Zumba have all been my passions without ONE injury.  I even took up Ballet this last year because I wanted to "challenge" my body.

I spent most of June, with my knee propped up, feeling terrible and coming to the realization that I might not be "Petra Pan" after all.

“Mom, you’re in your 50’s…things like this happen when you’re MIDDLE AGED.”

Definitely need to think of new legal ways to torture my child.

But, I digress…

I’ve been blessed and lucky enough to follow in my mother’s footsteps.  She learned how to ski when she was 60 and only reluctantly quit when she was in her mid 80’s.   I’d like to think that I share her zest for life.

"Who's aging?  If I live like I'm 30, I WILL be just 30!"

In hindsight, this seems a little silly and a bit delusional.  Of course, I’m aging.  I’m dealing with osteoarthritis, a high A1C and I’m definitely not running my 10 minute mile anymore.

And that is the reality.

I have to pay attention to taking care of myself differently.

Adaption is the key

I have to eat less of my favorite foods, walk instead of run and put myself to bed instead of pushing myself harder.  And most of all, I had to stop looking at the “new” me negatively.

Trust me, this is a work-in-progress.

But, I think I’m on the right path.   I was describing to my daughter how I was finally able to do a pirouette without knocking anyone down.  I happily described myself as the Hippo with the Tutu in Fantasia.  And, I focused on the action, not what it looked like.

“Wow…Hippos can dance…who knew…”

“Who knew indeed?   BTW…posted your baby picture on Facebook…it was completely “adorbs!”  I know I'm gonna get A LOT of likes”

The best revenge is hearing a teenage anguished scream and knowing that every parent is LOL'ing with me right now.

I’ll work on “letting go” my grievances next month...

NURTURE – The Post Vacation Blues – If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Might As Well Join ‘Em…

5.9-Cinque Terra

I just got back from Italy last Thursday.  The jet lag got me for at least three days and today, I’ve finally stopped waking up at 3 a.m.…I wake up at 6 now…

We had a wonderful time.  We slept in for most mornings, had Prosecco and wine with lunch every day (as well as dessert) and spent most of our time exploring hilltop “provincales” and fantasizing about retiring to Italy.

 Pure bliss…

And now it’s Tuesday morning.  I had great excuses yesterday for not getting back to work.  I had to pick up my teen and spend some quality time with her since I hadn’t seen her for two weeks.  I also had my household chores as well as returning emails and phone calls.  Oh, and I also had to do EVERYTHING ELSE except go back to my computer.

This block surprised me.  While I was on vacation, ideas were flowing like crazy…and believe it or not, I was actually looking forward to going home and turning these ideas into brilliant blog posts.   I even scheduled time to write them in my daily work calendar.     But now…proprio niente….nothing at all…

“How’s the blog going?

“YOU KNOW…you can’t rush the creative process!”

“Ok, but I don’t think you’re going to get creative by binge watching the second season of Dexter!”

 Everyone is a critic…

Whenever I hit blocks, I always hit the gym.  For some reason, I’m able to not only work out my body but my mind.  As I was on the treadmill, listening to 70’s Disco Jams, I came to realize that I was focusing on missing Italy instead of taking away the experience of Italy.

In other words, mourning the loss instead of celebrating the joy I got to feel while on vacation.

Realizing that shift got me going again.

I can be quite the robot sometimes.  I put my mind to something and I rarely let anything or anyone get in my way to accomplishing it.  This is how I was able to get my MBA while going through a divorce, selling the house and taking care of my little one.  This is the how I was able to hire sixty people in thirty days.  This is how I make sure that four dogs, one cat, one teen and one stubborn man are healthy, happy and moving forward.

 Total focus….

 Vacation messes that up...

Our wonderful Italian host offered to cook us an authentic four course Italian meal.  He inquired about what we liked to eat.  I dutifully recited that I ate a LOT of vegetables with lean protein.  He looked at me, puzzled, and asked,

“Why you not-a eat-a the wonderful pasta, here?  What-a is-a wrong-a with-a you?  I make-a special dish for you!”

I ate pasta EVERY day after that.  It was my obligation as a good citizen representing America.  We must be a good example.

I learned to let more things go.  I didn’t work out every day like I do at home.  I didn’t schedule anything except for the Cinque Terre tour (which of course, was planned two months in advance)  I felt so relaxed because I wasn’t stressed out trying to keep to my schedule.  I had great broken Italian-English conversations with anyone that could understand what I was trying to say.  I smiled all the time.

It was heaven…

But, as we all know…we can’t be on vacation all the time.  At least not for me…

Even if I had all the money in the world and could travel all the time, I would need some sense of purpose whether it was a quest to find the most beautiful place in the world or eat the most sinfully delicious dessert and then report my findings back to you.

However, is there anything that prevents us from taking some of that joy from our vacations and somehow incorporating it into our daily lives?

 What about….

Exploring a place that we’ve never been to before?

Trying different dishes or indulging, once in a while, in pasta or dessert?....

What about having casual conversations with people that we don’t know?

 Smiling more often than not?

I’m now declaring two Sundays out of the month as my “vacation” time...

I will drink Prosecco with my Sunday Brunch dish that’s off my Daily Diet List at the new fabulous restaurant and save time to explore the new neighborhood that it’s in.

I’m going to strike up friendly conversations with people who look friendly.  (Another upside is I will completely embarrass my Teen!)

And, I’m going to smile A LOT!

Who’s with me?  Where are we going to go?

'Till Next Time...
